Child actor or child actress is generally applied to a child with career in acting in television, films and stage, or adult performer who beagn acting as a child, thus, they are called former child actor/actresses. Child stars who continued with their acting career until they reach as teens, they are called teenage actor or teen actor, an actor who became famous as a teenager. In some cases, thee are child stars who never got to see the money they earned, as the case of child actor Jackie Coogan born John Leslie “Jackie” Coogan (October 26, 1914 – March 1, 1984, died at age 69 of heart attack) earned millions of dollars as a child actor, but never profited his earnings because his parents squandered his earned money. Because of this controversy, in 1939, California enacting the Coogan Law which requires a portion of the earnings of a child actor must be deposited in a special savings account known as blocked trust. Most of the child stars, may experience unique and negative pressures when working on the set of filming in a location and under tight production schedules. Big production projects depending on the child star’s ability to deliver an effective performance add to the pressure. Some child stars became successful in their acting career and continued acting into their adulthood, but there are child stars who failed to reach stardom while growing up. The failure to retain stardom in some cases, and success has caused many child actors to lead adult lives plagued by legal troubles, drug abuse and bankruptcy.
1) Butch Patrick
Butch Patrick is an American actor who started his acting career as a child actor, born Patrick Alan Lilley on August 2, 1953 in Los Angeles, California. Butch Patrick began his acting career at the age of eight, and his notable performance on the CBS comedy television series from 1964 to 1966, The Munster, playing the role as Eddie Munster, and in the 1966 Munster, Go Home feature film. In 2005, Patrick appeared in a cameo role as man who become a werewolf in the retro-horror film Frankenstein vs. the Creature from Blood Cove directed by William Winckler, speaking a line of comical dialog in reference to The Munster. It was announced on July 30, 2010, that Patrick would marry Donna McCall, a long-time Munsters fan. Patrick and McCall have communication while Patrick was working and appeared on The Munsters. According to his agent, Patrick decided to moved to Philadelphia because for McCall, however,Patrick and McCall separated after the 2010 Halloween. On November 11, 2010, after few weeks, Patrick had entered a drug rehabilitation in New Jersey according to People and E! Online. Patrick announced that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2011. Patrick revealed that that his disease was detected earlier and remained positive that there is a good chance of cure from cancer. He revealed that he was trying to kill himself for 41 years, but now he reached the point taht he still want to live longer after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
2) Robert Blake
Robert Blake born Michael James Vincenzo Gubitosi in Nutley, New Jersey on September 18, 1933, is an American actor who began to perform as a child actor in the film Our Gang (Little Rascals) in the final years of MGM from 1939 to 1944. Blake whose work includes starring roles the film In Cold Blood and Baretta a U.S. television series. Blake also appeared as a child actor in 22 entries of the Red Ryder film franchise and in many of his other adult roles, he was cast as a Latino and Native American character. In 1938, the family moved to Los Angeles, California, where Blake and his siblings began working as movie extras. Blake revealed that he was physically and sexually abused by his parents especially his alcoholic father, and grew up in unhappy childhood, and while growing up and was frequently locked in a closet and forced to eat off the floor. In 1955, Blake’s father committed suicide. At the age of fourteen, Blake ran away from home, encountered several more difficult years. Blake was married to Sondra Kerr,in 1961, and they had two children together, actor Noah Blake born 1965 and Delinah Blake born in 1966. The couple divorced in 1983. In 1999, Blake met formerly of Wharton, New Jersey, Bonnie Lee Bakley, who was reported of exploiting older men for money, especially celebrities. Bakley was dating Christian Brando, son of Marlon Brando while in a relationship with Blake. When Bakley became pregnant and told Brando and Blake that they were the father. Bakley named the baby Christian Shannon Brando and stated that Brando was the father of her child. Bakley wrote letters describing her doubtful motives to Blake. Blake insisted that she take a DNA test to prove the paternity, and after the test it was proven that Blake was the biological father of her child and was renamed Rose. On November 19, 2000, Blake and Bakley married. It was Blake’s second marriage and while for Bakley, it was her tenth marriage. On May 4, 2001, Blake took Bakley to an Italian dinner at Vitello’s Restaurant on Tujunga Avenue in Studio City on May 4, 2001, afterward, Bakley was killed by a gunshot to the head while sitting in the car. The gun that Blake claimed he had left in the restaurant was later determined not to have fired the shots that killed Bakley. On March 16, 2005, was tried and acquitted for the 2001 murder of second wife Bonnie Lee Bakley, and of one of the two counts of soliciting a former stuntman to murder her. The other count of solicitation was dropped after it was revealed that the jury was deadlocked 11-1 in favor of an acquittal.On November 18, 2005, Blake was found liable for the wrongful death of his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, in a civil trial. The three eldest children of Bonnie Lee Bakley sued him, asserting he was responsible for their mother’s death. The jury ordered him to pay $30 million on April 26, 2008, a court of appeals upheld the civil case verdict, but cut Blake’s penalty assessment in half.
3) Todd Bridges
Todd Anthony Bridges is an American actor, best known as a child actor role as Willis Jackson in comedy sitcom Diff’rent Strokes of NBC/ABC network, and on the UPN/CW sitcom Everybody Hates Chris as Monk. Todd Bridges is currently a comedian- commentator which airs on truTV on the television series TruTV Presents: World’s Dumbest. Todd Bridges and American actress-comedian, 87 year-old Charlotte Rae are the only surviving original Diff’rent Strokes cast members, since Canadian-American actor Conrad Bain who played as Phillip Drummond, died on January 14, 2013 of natural causes, Dana Plato , also a child star, who played the role as Kimberly Drummond who died of a drug overdose on May 8, 1999, and and former child actor in a lead role Gary Coleman died of epidural hematoma on May 28, 2010 after a fall. Todd Bridges is the son of actress, director and manager Betty Alice Pryor, and James Bridges, Sr., an agent. Todd is married to Dori Smith Bridges , but will be divorcing and has one son, Spencir Bridges ,born July 15, 1998, who is also a child actor best known for his role as Ben Hinton, formerly portrayed by a child actor Khamani Griffin in Daddy Day Camp, also appeared on iCArly, House,M.D. and ER. Todd Bridges has a daughter, Bo, from a previous relationship. Todd Bridges battled a cocaine addiction for several years that started during his 20′s. Todd was arrested and tried in 1988, for the attempted murder of Kenneth “Tex” Clay, a drug dealer of Los Angeles whom, prosecutors argued, had been shot by Bridges while on an episode of heavy drinking. He was represented by a high profiled defense attorney, Johnnie Cochran and Bridges pleaded not guilty to the charges. Johnnie Cochran successfully portrayed Todd Bridges as an abused minor who had been influenced to use drugs by an exploitative entertainment industry, and being framed unfairly. Finally, a witness finally testified that Todd Bridges was not present at the time of the shooting incident, and was acquitted by the jury of all charges. Way back in 1993, Bridges was involved in an altercation with David Joseph Kitchen, a tenant, over a rental payment. David Kitchen attacked Todd Bridges with a sword, then Bridges retaliated by stabbing him with a kitchen knife in the chest, but the charges was dropped by the prosecutors, concluding Bridges had acted in self-defense. Todd Bridges and his brother James Bridges were credited in 1998, for saving the life of Stella Kline, a 51-year-old paraplegic woman, when the said woman nearly drowned when her wheelchair rolled into a lake while she was fishing.
4) Corey Feldman
Corey Scott Feldman is an American actor, a former child, and singer, became known in the 1980s, with roles in the Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, The Goonies, Stand by Me, The Lost Boys, License to Drive, Dream a Little Dream, Gremlins, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The ‘Burbs. Corey Feldman is also the lead singer for the ska band Truth Movement. In the 1990′s Feldman began providing the voice of Donatello for the first film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action movie. Corey Feldman continued working with his friend, the late Corey Haim on independent films, and a sequel to their last mainstream film together, Dream A Little Dream 2. At the age of 15, Feldman stated that he began the “Emancipation Proclamation in Hollywood, when he was granted emancipation (where a minor becomes an adult in practice, usually by receiving a declaration of liberation from a court expressly for this purpose) from his parents. Feldman stated that he was worth $1 million by age 15, and by the time the judge court-ordered the bank records to come forward, only $40,000 remained. From 1989 to 1993, Corey Feldman was married to actress Vanessa Marcil. In January 2002, he met actress and model Susie Sprague in a nightclub and married on October 30 2002, during the final episode of the first season of The Surreal Life. However, Feldman and Sprague split after seven years of marriage in October 2009, Sprague filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. She sought full custody of their son, with Feldman having visitation rights and a spousal support. Feldman sought for joint custody and asked the court to block spousal support of Sprague’s demand. In an interview in August 2011, Feldman revealed that he was a victim of pedophilia in the 1980s, accusing the late singer, Michael Jackson, by damaging his childhood when MJ befriended and abandoned him later. Corey Feldman was subpoenaed to testify against Michael Jackson during his child molestation trial in February 2005, where the late singer, MJ was accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy, believed to be a cancer survivor, spent time at his Neverland Ranch. MJ and Feldman became close after Feldman became famous as child star in Gremlins, The Goonies and Stand By Me.
5) Corey Haim
Corey Ian Haim born December 23, 1971 and died on March 10, 2010, was a Canadian actor, known as a teen idol in Hollywood in the 1980s. Corey Haim appeared in numerous films such as Lucas, Silver Bullet, Murphy’s Romance, License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream, and best boted for his role in The Lost Boys with co-star Corey Feldman. Haim and Feldman became famous in the 1980s known as The Two Coreys, and appeared together in The Two Coreys an A&E reality show and seven movies. Because of his successful career in the movie industry, led Haim to earn money and fame, and at the age of fifteen, he began using drugs, and as a teen actor, he had difficulties breaking away from his experience, and was troubled by drug addiction. Haim is still single until the time of his death. From 1987 to 1990, Haim was involved with actress Alyssa Milano and her parents, together with his manager at the time, unsuccessfully tried to help Haim from his drug addiction. In 2000, Corey Haim was engaged to model Cindy Guyer, after Haim met Guyer two days after in a Chicago autograph show, and proposed to Guyer. In October 2008, Haim was engaged with actress Tiffany Shepis, and moved Haim to Arizona to helped Haim with his addiction, that the couple were engaged to be married on May 9, 2009. In the time leading up to his death, Haim shared a month-to-month rental with his mother who had breast cancer that time, located at the Oakwood Apartments between Burbank and the Hollywood Hills. Haim’s mother phoned 9-1-1, on March 10, 2010, paramedics took Haim from their home to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m at age 38. According to Los Angeles police, Haim’s death appeared to be an accidental overdose and retrieved from his room four bottles containing Valium, Vicodin, Soma, a muscle relaxant and Haloperidol, an anti-psychotic medication, but that no illegal drugs were found at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office ruled that Haim’s death was due to pneumonia. Corey Haim’s mother stated that she received courtesy call from the coroner to confirm his preliminary findings that the late actor, Corey Haim has suffered from an enlarge heart and water in the lungs, and died of pulmonary edema.
6) Peter Ostrum
Peter Gardner Ostrum born November 1957, is a former child actor, who starred in the 1971 as Charlie Bucket in the motion picture Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Ostrum is a native of Cleveland, and practices as an animal veterinarian and lives in Lowville, New York, with his wife Loretta Lepkowski-Ostrum, and two children, his son Leif and daughter Helenka. Ostrum has been known as “the most famous man in Lowville”, where the local video rental shop, where VHS copy of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory has twice worn out its copy. During his filming of Willy Wonka, he would returned home after the shooting, where his family owned a horse, and as a teen, he was interested in the horse, and left him the impression of becoming an animal veterinarian. After he finished filming Willy Wonka, Ostrum who was 13 years old at that time, declined the offer of another three-film contract, recalling that “everybody thinks that acting is such a glamorous profession, but it’s a difficult profession.” Dr. Peter Ostrum practices his profession at the Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Lowville, New York as of January 2012.
7) Brandon Cruz
Brandon Edwin Cruz is an American actor, a former child star,born May 28, 1962, continued as a child actor for many years until the demise of The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, a comedy-drama series, best known for his role as Eddie Corbett, son of widower Tom Corbett (portrayed by actor Bill Bixby). Brandon Cruz has guest appearances in television shows such as Kung Fu, Gunsmoke and Incredible Hulk, reuniting him with Bill Bixby (his role as scientist Dr. David Banner and as Incredible Hulk). Brandon Cruz is also a punk rock musician, and as of April 2013, he works in the drug and alcohol rehabilitation in Southern California, as a sober companion and interventionist. In the 1976 film The Bad News Bears, Brandon Cruz also played the role of Yankees pitcher Joey Turner. In 1980s, Cruz turned his attention to music and performed with Dr. Know, a hardcore punk band, and has released several records before dissolving in 2010. From 2001 to 2003, Cruz also served as lead vocalist with Dead Kennedys. Since June 1994, Brandon Cruz has been married to actress Liz Cruz, and together they have a son (his middle name is Bixby, he named in honor of his friend and co-star Bill Bixby) and a daughter.
8) Kirk Cameron
Kirk Thomas Cameron (born October 12, 1970) is an American actor, best known in his Growing Pains (1985 to 1992) television comedy show playing the role as Mike Seaver, as well as numerous television and film appearances as a child actor. In the 1980s and 1990s, Cameron had several appearances on television shows and in the films from 1980s to 1990s, such as Like Father Like Son and Listen To Me. In the 2000s, Cameron has appeared in the film series Left Behind playing the role as Cameron “Buck” Williams in 2000s and in 2008 drama film Fireproof as Caleb Holt. Cameron began acting at age nine as commercial actor for breakfast cereal advertisement, and at age thirteen he appeared in Two Marriages, television series,and became famous in 1985 after he was cast in the ABC television sitcom Growing Pains as Mike Seaver. Mike Seaver have a girlfriend Kate McDonald, portrayed by Chelsea Noble, and later became his real life wife. Cameron is currently the partner of Ray Comfort in the evangelical ministry, The Way of the Master, and co-founder of The Firefly Foundation with wife, Chelsea Noble, and Cameron is currently an active evangelical Christian. 9) Candace Cameron
Candace Helaine Cameron Bure (born April 6, 1976) is an American actress, producer, and author, best known as a child actor, portrayed the role as D.J. Tanner from age 10 to age 18, in the Full House television series. Candace Cameron is the sister of former child actor Kirk Cameron, whom she followed the footsteps of her older brother Kirk, and decided to pursue acting. Candace Cameron started in the entertainment business by appearing in a number of television commercials, guest starred roles on shows such as St. Elsewhere, Growing Pains and Who’s the Boss? Candace Cameron auditioned for the lead role on Small Wonder, but the role was given to Tifanny Brissette. Cameron portrayed a girl named Jennifer who had been kidnapped by her father in an episode of Punky Brewster sitcom in 1985, played as the youngest sister of Eric Stoltz in 1987′s teen comedy Some Kind of Wonderful, and in the same year, Cameron started her most notable role as Donna Jo “D.J.” Tanner in her acting career on the sitcom Full House, the oldest daughter of Tanner family. On August 31, 2010, their daughter Beatrix Carlin Sweetin-Coyle was born. In January 2011, Sweetin and Coyle became engaged and married on March 15, 2012 in Beverly Hills. In June 2013, Sweetin filed for legal separation from Coyle. Sweetin have undergo a recovering period from drug addiction, who began using methamphetamine after Full House, because she was bored, which Sweetin discusses her drug addiction days, breaking into tears while addressing into a crowd at Marquette University in Wisconsin, about growing up on television and about how much her life had improved since getting sober from her addiction, from methamphetamine, cocaine and ecstasy.
11) Tifanny Brissette (Small Wonder)
Tiffany Michelle Brissette, born December 26, 1974, is a former American child actress, best known for her role as V.I.C.I. the Robot, Vicki Lawson, in the Small Wonder, on the syndicated American television sitcom aired from 1985 to 1989. Brissette first appeared in the film Heart Like a Wheel in 1983 opposite Bonnie Bedelia (aunt of child actor Macaulay Culkin , of Home Alone) and Beau Bridges. She appeared in a guest role on Webster. Brissetts beat out child stars Candace Cameron Bure and Heather O’Rourke for the role as Vicki Lawson, The Robot on 1985′s Small Wonder. Brissette continued acting, after the Small Wonder series was canceled in 1989, appearing in Parker Lewis Can’t Lose and the Beanpole, a 1990 television movie. In 1991, Brissette’s last professional acting role was in Equal Justice, the television series. In 2007, Tiffany Brissette currently works as a nurse in Boulder, Colorado.
Heather O’Rourke
Heather O’Rourke (December 27, 1975 – February 1, 1988) was an American child actress from San Diego, California. At the age of five, Heather O’Rourke was discovered by director Steven Spielberg while eating lunch with her mother at the MGM commissary. O’Rourke was cast by Director Spielberg as Carol Anne Freeling, a little girl abducted by ghosts in Poltergeist, the 1982 horror film. In the second and third Poltergeist film series, O’Rourke would go on to reprise the role of Carol Anne. O’Rourke also had a recurring role on Happy Days from 1982 to 1983, in addition for her acting work in the Poltergeist film series and had several guest appearances on television. Heather O’Rourke died of cardiac arrest at the age of 12 and septic shock (a medical condition as a result of severe infection and sepsis can cause multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death) caused by a misdiagnosed intestinal stenosis in February 1988. O’Rourke played Carol Anne Freeling, a young suburban girl who becomes the conduit and target for supernatural entities in the Poltergeist trilogy.
12) Brad Renfo
Brad Barron Renfro was an American actor and former child star, born (July 25, 1982 – January 15, 2008), started with his acting career at the age of eleven, in the lead role as as Mark Sway of Joel Schumacher’s The Client , a 1994 American legal thriller film and starring Susan Sarandon as Regina “Reggie” Love, Tommy Lee Jones as “Reverend” Roy Foltrigg and Brad Renfro. The film is based on the novel of the same name by author John Grisham, and on July 20, 1994, the film was released in the United States. In June 5, 1998, Renfro, was arrested in Knoxville, Tennessee, his hometown, when police stopped his car and pulled him over and allegedly found cocaine and marijuana in his pants and socks. And was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in August 28, 2000, on a grand-theft charge for allegedly trying to steal a 45-foot yacht, where his companion failed to untie the boat from the dock, and causes a big damage to both the boat and the dock, and on January 5, 2001, he was sentenced to two years’ probation and was ordered to pay for the repairs of the yacht of more than $4,000. However his acting career faded rapidly due to addiction of substance abuse and alcoholism. Brad Renfro was found dead on January 15, 2008 in his Los Angeles apartment, died at the age of 25 from a heroin overdose.His grandmother Joanne, who raised and accompanied him during his acting career, died of natural causes at the age of 76 at her home, seventeen days after Renfro’s death.
13) Macaulay Culkin
Macaulay Carson Culkin (born August 26, 1980) is an American actor, a former child actor who became famous for his role as Kevin McCallister in Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Culkin is also known for his roles in Richie Rich, Uncle Buck, My Girl, The Pagemaster, Party Monster and the Black or White music video for his best friend Michael Jackson. On September 3, 2009, Culkin attended Michael Jackson’s funeral. Macaulay Culkin was regarded as the most successful child actor during his fame, after child actress Shirley Temple. Culkin ranked in the list of 100 Greatest Kid-Stars at number two on VH1′s list and E!’s list of the 50 Greatest Child Stars. He is the son of former actor Christopher Cornelius “Kit” Culkin, known for his productions on Broadway and is the brother of actress Bonnie Bedelia, his mother is Patricia Brentrup, who never married. He was raised Roman Catholic, and was the third of seven children, five boys and two girls, Shane (born 1976), Dakota (1978–2008), Kieran (born 1982), Quinn (born 1984), Christian (born 1987), and Rory (born 1989). Kieran Culkin, his brother, played the role as his cousin Fuller in Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). His brother Rory Culkin, now an established actor in his own right, has played both Macaulay’s little brother (in The Good Son (1993) and the younger version of Macaulay’s character (in Ri¢hie Ri¢h (1994)). His 29-year-old sister, Dakota Culkin, passed away after accidentally being struck by a car on December 10th 2008 in Los Angeles, California. The family lived in a small apartment, during Culkin’s early childhood, his mother was a telephone operator and his father worked as a sacristan at a local Catholic church. In an interview on Larry King Live, in May 27 2004, Culkin stated, that he wanted to refrain from talking about his personal life, although he talked his life as a child actor, and also his estrangement from his father, and how he retired from his acting career at the age of fourteen. In 1998, Macaulay Culkin married actress Rachel Miner but in 2000, they separated, and divorced in 2002. In May 2002, Culkin began dating actress Mila Kunis. Mila Kunis’ publicist confirmed on January 3, 2011, reports that Culkin and Kunis had split amicably several months previously,and they remain” close friends.” Culkin was arrested in Oklahoma City on September 17, 2004, for the possession of 17.3 grams marijuana and two controlled substances, 16.5 milligrams of Alprazolam and 32 milligrams of Clonazepam, and was later released on a $4,000 bail.

Mason Wilson Gamble is an American actor and a former child actor who was noted for his role as Dennis Mitchell in the film Dennis the Menace in 1993, born January 16, 1986, a role given to him after beating out a reported 20,000 children who had auditioned. Gamble also played the role as the sidekick of Dirk Calloway in Wes Anderson playing the role as Jason Schwartzman and in 1998 Owen Wilson’s film Rushmore, and also played the role as a dyslexic boy in Anya’s Bell with American actress and singer, Della Reese. Gamble played the role as Brady Lang in the thriller film 1999′s Arlington Road. Gamble also appeared with a small role in the short-lived CBS drama Kate Brasher in 2001, a cameo role as McCluckey in Spy Hard, the 1996 comedy. Gamble is the son of actor Tim Gamble and Sally Gamble, was born in Chicago. Illinois. He graduated at the UCLA in 2008, and was member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at UCLA. Rupert Grint
Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint is an English actor who rose to prominence for playing the role as Ron Weasley, at the age of 11, one of the Harry Potter film series, three main characters. From 2001 to 2011, Grint starred in all eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011, with his co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. Grint also co-starred in a comedy film Wild Target, with actors Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt. Grint’s new film CBGB (a 2013 American historical film about the former New York music venue CBGB) playing the role as American musician Cheetah Chrome, will be released in 2013 and Grint has been cast in new pilot of CBS’s Super Clyde, and on October 2013, he will be making his stage debut in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo at the London’s Harold Pinter Theater. Grint’s close friends are his Harry Potter co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, whom he said having known with each other since childhood, they are like brothers and sisters. Grint, like his character, he has a fear of spiders also called arachnophobia. To fulfill one of his childhood dream, Grint bought an ice cream van. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in September 2013, that his next acting project will be the film, Enemy of Man, the Macbeth adaptation, and he will be starring with actors Sean Bean (English actor best known for portraying as Boromir in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy), Charles Dance, Jason Flemyng, James D’Arcy, Neil Maskell and Joe Gilgun, also a former child star. The film is distributed by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution, and is directed by director Vincent Regan. The filming production will be released in the United Kingdom in January 2014.
