Strange, Creepy and Weird Necropolis

The large burial ground or called “cemetery” with unique, strange ancient tombs is known as necropolis. Necropolis is a Greek term “nekropolis” which means “city of the dead“. Most of ancient necropolis are found outside the abandoned city or large towns, used only as burial grounds. The prehistoric burial grounds that do not include structures above the grounds or markers is known as Gravefield. Row graves, urn-fields, tumulus (tumuli) and many more are included in necropolis.

1) Tyre Necropolis or Al-Bass Tyre Necropolis in Lebanon

This ancient necropolis, the Tyre necropolis or Al-Bass Tyre necropolis was rediscovered in 1962 in the city of Tyre, Lebanon. Hundreds of stones and sarcophagi marbles from the Roman and Byzantine era was found at the necropolis and some of the tombs have Greek inscriptions.

There are 7000 dolmens scattered at the Roknia necropolis in the Guelma region of northeast of Algeria. Dolmen are known as “portal tombs, portal graves or quoit“, a single-chamber type of megalithic tombs (above-ground burial chambers, built of big stone-slabs (megalithic), and laid on the edge and covered with soil and small stones.

5) Talaiots Necropolis or Talayots are the megalithic structures of the Bronze age, some are found in the Islands of Majorca and Minorca which is part of the Talaiotic cultures.

Cairn, man-made pile of stones used as markers and sepulcher monuments, commonly found in uplands, moorland, mountain top, near water ways and sea-cliffs, barren, deserts and tundra areas.

6) Chamber Tombs signify a higher status for the dead in case of individual burials instead being buried or interred in a simple grave. The chamber tombs can be in different forms according to cultures and tradition of every country.

7) Hallstatt tumulus, Austria Necropolis in Sulm Valley

The Burgstallkogel also called Grillkogel is a hill located near the Sulm Valley and Saggau river valleys in the Southern Styria in Austria, and surrounding these hills, is considered one of the largest tumulus graves of at least 2000 tumuli. The people of Burgstallkogel cremated the deceased with the personal articles before buried in the grave chambers called tumulus, a piled earth to build the tumulus.

The crypts is an underground chamber or vault tomb, beneath a church and used as burial grounds for private or concealed funerals in early times.
